STEAMBOAT PILOT & TODAY

For country living at an affordable price, Moffat County offers good options.

The county seat of Craig is a rural, working-class community. Homes that would cost $300,000 in Steamboat Springs cost about $100,000 here. Land that would sell for $10,000 an acre in Steamboat Springs runs about $1,000 an acre here.

A good number of residents make the 45-minute commute from Craig to Steamboat for work. But, the community has remained close-knit and family-oriented, making it a good place for young families who are priced out of the Steamboat market to settle.

Craig, which has a population of about 10,000, also offers a range of convenient shopping opportunities, so residents donít have to drive far to pick up groceries or eat out for dinner.

The surrounding land is open, with rolling hills dotted by trees. Some areas are split into five and 35-acre parcels for homes, but much of the county is devoted to working ranches and to national forests.

Both agriculture and recreation are important to the region. Top choices for recreation include hunting and snowmobiling. Another attraction is Dinosaur National Monument, at the western edge of the county, which contains a large deposit of dinosaur bones as well as endless options for hiking and camping.

The population in Moffat County is almost 13,200. Median home prices are about $105,000.
